HOW DO I PREP FOR A SHOOT?
HOW DO I PREP FOR A SHOOT?
With a plan in mind, I pull together wardrobe, props, etc. Sometimes I ask the model to bring items, but I have an extensive wardrobe that works for my needs. Over the years in theatre, people have donated costumes. I have purchased items I believe will be used again.
Salvation Army and Goodwill have been an excellent source of supply. Also, if you are really patient and willing to look through 50 pages of items, there are great bargains on Amazon. I purchased the feather capelet in this image from Amazon.
There is also an assortment of wigs in various lengths and weird colors from when that trend was big. Hoping it will come back soon because right now they are just hanging out. All of these were purchased for very low prices on Amazon. have tulle in so many colors I can't even tell you. Tulle is cheap-maybe $1 per yard-and looks really cool in photos as wraps and flying in the air.
There is usually something in my studio that I can use for the shoot with the exception of shoes. Too many sizes, too many styles, too many colors. The model needs to bring shoes or we will shoot barefoot since I think that’s adorable. If it doesn’t work, I’ll hide her feet in the pose or behind a prop. Sometimes I have to crop the image.
I have collected enough jewelry to work for my style of shoots, most of it from my daughter’s cast offs, and 70% off sales at places like Charming Charlie's. Salvation Army and Goodwill have excellently unexpensive items.
Props are used sparingly because I prefer that the photo be about the model but changing this is a working goal for me since I must stop showing faces! I may have more bins of faux flowers than anyone needs. And green vines. Vines tangled like Christmas lights. *expletive goes here*
There is a small table in my studio. I pull items in advance of the shoot and lay them out so we remember to use them. Wigs, jewelry, hand props, tulle. But no matter how well I plan, I have a million ideas during the shoot. By the end, the studio is a disaster because pull items out in a rush-and never neatly because I hate making the model wait.
That's just a glimpse into the preparation, which is a small part of a photoshoot.
