Does Dark Art Sell?
Yes, it does. There are many collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the mysterious and thought-provoking nature of macabre, haunting or gothic art. Artists like H.R. Giger, Zdzisław Beksiński, and Francis Bacon have gained recognition for their dark and surreal creations. And me!! I actually sell work, too!
Horror movies have an 11% market share, coming in 4th out of 10 categories. Horror/occult book sales were up 32% last year. We love horror, especially when the world is at unrest. Oddly, we like to escape into different terrors. Dark art allows us to explore what frightens us, standing on the ledge between life and death without ever really having to risk falling. We know that scary stories date all the way back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. There is evidence suggesting that the horror stories that shared back then don’t differ much from the types we tell today.
Many consider Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto to be the first true horror novel, inspired by medieval history and artifacts. Gothic literature is defined by its dark, atmospheric settings, its highly emotional storylines, and the exploration of frightening and grotesque themes.
